Privacy policy
Last updated: 14 October 2026 (v2)
We're a small crew of riders building a map for riders. We collect as little as we can, never sell your data and never show you ads. This policy explains what we process, why, and what your rights are.
1. Who is responsible
The controller for the processing described here is:
Wind Nomads
Fabian Wyss
Bachtobelstrasse 6h
8472 Seuzach
Switzerland
Email: info@windnomads.com
Web: windnomads.com
For anything about your data, write to info@windnomads.com. We apply the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP/DSG) and, where it applies to you, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
2. What we process and why
Visiting the website
When you open windnomads.com, your browser sends technical data to our web server (IP address, date and time, page requested, browser and operating system, referring page). Our hosting provider stores this in server logs for security and troubleshooting and deletes it after a short period. Legal basis (GDPR): our legitimate interest in running a secure website (Art. 6(1)(f)).
We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
Your account
To join the crew we need your email address, a password (stored only as a secure hash by our login provider) and a username. We also ask for your country of origin and what you ride (kite, wing or something else, with an optional free text). Optionally you can add a bio, a profile picture, your riding level and your «perfect vibe» settings (preferred wind, water and air temperature). We use this to run your account, show your profile and personalise the wind ratings for you. Legal basis: performance of our agreement with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
We send you emails only for your account (confirming your address, resetting your password, changing your email).
What you share with the crew
When you add a spot, kite house or school, rate a session, write a review or upload photos and videos, we store this content together with your account. Spots, houses, schools, ratings and review texts are public. On reviews you choose whether your username is shown or you appear as «Anonymous nomad». Photos and videos you upload are published with the place and can be opened by anyone who has the link.
Location data: when you add a place you can use your device's GPS. Your position is only used in your browser to place the pin; we store the coordinates of the place you save, not where you were. Photo metadata: we re-encode photos in your browser before upload, which removes embedded metadata such as GPS position. Videos and some image formats (e.g. HEIC) are uploaded as they are and may contain metadata – remove it first if you don't want to share it.
Your public profile
Your profile page can only be opened by logged-in members. Your username, flag, what you ride, level, bio and XP level are shown there. Under Account › Privacy you decide whether your profile picture, favorite spots, stamps, the places you added and your uploads are shown as well. Your basic profile (username, country, what you ride, bio) is not secret: it can appear next to your contributions and in lists such as rankings, unless you post a review anonymously.
Checking new entries (with the help of AI)
New places and the feedback you send are checked with the help of Claude, an AI model by Anthropic, PBC (USA). Claude receives the content of the entry (name, position, description, photos where needed) or your feedback, and suggests whether to approve it, corrects names or translates safety notes. A person from our team always makes the final decision. Anthropic processes this content to provide the service to us; our Claude account is set so that this content is not used to train Anthropic's models. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the map accurate and safe (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Feedback box
If you send feedback, we store your message, any screenshots or videos you attach, and technical information that helps us reproduce bugs: page, browser and version, screen and window size, language and time zone. Attachments are deleted 90 days after your feedback is closed, or when you delete your account. You receive XP and a message about what happened with your idea.
Contact form
If you write to us through the contact form, your name, email address and message are sent by email to info@windnomads.com and kept in our mailbox as long as needed to answer you. To block spam we check the message for links and typical spam words and keep a one-way hash of your IP address for one hour to limit the number of messages. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) or steps prior to an agreement (Art. 6(1)(b)).
Wanna-go lists
Places you save with «Wanna go» and the names of your lists are private: only you can see them.
Data stored in your browser
We store a few things in your browser's local storage: your login session (so you stay logged in), whether you prefer the map or satellite view, the wanna-go list you used last, and whether you postponed a question. These are strictly necessary or simple preferences; nothing is used for tracking.
3. Service providers we use
We work with the following providers. Some of them are located outside Switzerland and the EU/EEA (notably in the USA). Where this is the case we rely on adequacy decisions (e.g. the Swiss-U.S. and EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework for certified companies) or on standard contractual clauses.
| Provider | What for | Data | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| METANET AG | Web hosting, email | Server logs, emails | Switzerland |
| Supabase, Inc. | Database, login, file storage | Account, profile, content, uploads | Data stored in Zurich, Switzerland; company in the USA |
| Anthropic, PBC | AI checks of new entries and feedback | Content of entries and feedback | USA |
| OpenStreetMap Foundation | Map tiles, address lookup (Nominatim) | IP address, map area, searched coordinates | UK, delivered via a worldwide CDN |
| Esri | Satellite imagery and place labels | IP address, map area | USA |
| komoot (Photon) | Place search and name suggestions | IP address, search text, coordinates | Germany |
| Overpass API (OSM community servers) | Coastlines, restaurants, parking near a spot | IP address, map area | Europe |
| Open-Meteo | Wind, weather, tide and climate data | IP address, coordinates of spots | Europe |
| Google Fonts | Fonts | IP address | USA |
| jsDelivr, cdnjs (Cloudflare) | Program libraries (login library, map library) | IP address | Worldwide CDN |
Map and weather requests are sent directly from your browser to these providers; they receive your IP address and the area or spot you're looking at, but no account data.
4. How long we keep data
- Account and profile: as long as your account exists.
- Public contributions (places, ratings, reviews, photos): as long as they are useful for the map. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, reviews and uploads; places you added stay on the map without your name.
- Feedback: messages stay anonymous after account deletion; attachments are deleted after 90 days (see above).
- Server logs: according to our hosting provider's log rotation, usually a few weeks.
5. Your rights
You can ask us at any time which data we hold about you, and have it corrected, deleted, handed over in a common format, or its processing restricted. You may object to processing based on our legitimate interests. Much of it you can do yourself in your account; for everything else, including deleting your account, write to info@windnomads.com. We answer within 30 days.
You can also complain to a supervisory authority: in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC, edoeb.admin.ch), in the EU the authority of your country of residence.
6. Security
All connections are encrypted (HTTPS). Access to data is restricted by database rules (row level security), so you can only change your own data. Admin access is limited to the Wind Nomads team.
7. Age
Wind Nomads is meant for people aged 16 and over. If you are younger, please don't create an account.
8. Changes
We'll update this policy when we add features or providers. The date at the top shows the current version; for important changes we'll let members know in the app.
